Grapefruit

In midwinter, I make marmalade mulled wine in my slow cooker. For every bottle of cheap red wine, bung in a jar of homemade marmalade, a sliced orange, a cinnamon stick and a handful of cloves. Steep on low all day. Lynda Hallinan, Hunua Our ’Star Ruby’ grapefruit is a consistent performer. Huge, sweet, juicy and seedless fruit over a long season. The skin is yellow with a pink blush, and the flesh distinctly red/ pink. Three fruit equals approximately 600ml juice. Lindis Capper-Starr, Kerikeri ‘Golden Special’ is my favourite. It has large, juicy, almost seedless fruit that makes wonderful marmalade as well as eating fresh. We grow a dwarf one in a large container on our sheltered patio. Sue Caldwell, Raglan If size is a consideration, try growing the dwarf ‘Golden Special’ grapefruit that has been grafted onto Flying Dragon rootstock (check the plant label to ensure that it has been) to restrict plant height. This New Zealand selection has sweet and tangy, juicy fruit.
