Spinach

Spinach plants have shallow roots, making them ideal for pots if you lack space in the garden. Plant seedlings or sow seed into pots or buckets with drainage holes drilled into them. Water regularly and give plants fortnightly foliar feeds of a general vegetable fertiliser. I sow seeds in six-cell pots then plant out at about 6 weeks old with plenty of compost/manure/ organic matter. Water consistently and pick frequently so it doesn’t bolt to seed. ‘Popeye’ is a good variety, and the fancy purple orach spinach (Egmont Seeds) looks cool. Dawn Ballagh, Hororata
